Women Festival (Teej): Exclusively women’s celebrations, these 2 festivals are gay and colorful despite the solemn overtones of fasting and purification. Teej begins with a late night communal feast before the next days strict fast. The fast represents 3600 years of austerities the goddess Parvati performed to attract her husband Shiva, and is intended to ensure their husband’s long life. In the morning woman gather at Pashupatinath temple for a ritual bath. Then they dance and sing praise to Shiva during the afternoon. Two days latter on Rishi Panchmi they gather again for another ritual bath and puja.
