“The River of Gold “- SunKoshi River Rafting

Rapids : Meat Grinder, Punch & Judy, Valentino, High Anxiety, Jaws, El Wasto, Rakshi Roller, Dead Man’s Eddy, Big Dipper.

This is the longest river trip offered in Nepal, traversing 270 km through the beautiful Mahabharat Range on its meandering way from the put in at Dolalghat to the take out at Chatara, far down on the Gangetic Plain. It is quite an experience to begin a river trip just 3-hours out of Kathmandu, barely 60-km from the Tibet border, and end the trip looking down the hot, dusty gun barrel of the North Indian Plain just a week later.

The Sun Kosi starts off fairly relaxed, with class II and small class III rapids to warm up on during the first couple of days. Savvy guides will take this opportunity to get the teams to work with exquisite precision, as on the third day the rapids become more powerful and frequent, with high water trips finding themselves astonished at just how big a wave in a river can get. While the lower sections of large volume rivers are usually rather flat, the Sun Kosi reserves some of its biggest and best rapids for the last days. At the right flow it is an incredible combination of powerful whitewater, stunning scenery, villages, and truly quiet and introspective evenings along what many people consider to be one of the world’s ten classic river journeys.

Cost includes: All meals, transportation to the put in point and back from the take out point, all rafting equipment and accommodation on twin sharing basis.

Cost does not include: Sleeping bag/ mattress, alcoholic beverages, personal expenses and insurance.

Note: Our expedition starts and ends in Kathmandu.

Itinerary

There is a pre-departure briefing in our Pokhara office the evening before the expedition at 6 PM. This is a chance to get the group together and discuss the clinic. At the meeting you have a chance to meet the instructors and support group, and we can answer any final queries, give out personal gear bags and collect money for the beer kitty. Afterwards we will probably head to one of our local favorites for a relaxed meal.

Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (914m.) which takes about six hours. You depart for the six hours drive to Pokhara (915m,), 200 kilometers west of Kathmandu. As you climb out of the Kathmandu valley, only to quickly descend again to the Trisuli River, you follow upstream to its junction with the Marsyangdi River. You follow the Marsyandi gently up through heavily terraced fields and small hill towns to the Seti River that takes you directly into Pokhara. Having pleasant weather, Pokhara is tourist's paradise with full of natural as well as cultural heritage sites such as lakes, caves, temples of Buddhist and Hindus along with mountains. You can observe views to the north across the hills and Phewa Taal (lake) to the white peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. This drive will take most of the morning, leaving much of the afternoon to fall in love with its beauty. You can also fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara which takes about 25 minutes.

Day03

Pokhara to Rafting start point

After breakfast we head to the boathouse in Pokhara to be kitted with your means of transportation for the next 4 days; that being your kayak and all personal kayaking gear. Once everyone is kitted and fitted, we head to Fewa Lake in Pokhara and spend the day familiarizing ourselves with being in a kayak, covering the basic paddle strokes and with an aim to perfecting the perfect still Eskimo roll. We break for lunch and continue our water acrobatics well into the late afternoon. We head back to the boathouse to change into dry clothes, set up our bedding for the night on the big compound and enjoy some real home cookin'.

Day04

Rafting & overnight in Tent

We wake the next morning for an early breakfast before boarding our chartered bus. It is a 2-hour drive from Pokhara to our put in below Damauli. From here until take out, we live and breathe and sleep kayaking. We wake early each morning to get a good start on the day and with the combination of riverside theoretical and whitewater practical instruction to hone those much needed skills, you'll be looking for that perfect play hole to show off your surfing techniques before long!

Day05

Rafting & overnight in Tent

On average we paddle 5 – 6 hours each day. You'll quickly begin to feel muscles you never knew existed before. We camp out each night on river beaches, and after enjoying a hearty meal there is time to relax by the camp fire with a hot rum punch exchanging, and often exaggerating, whitewater tales and experiences.

Day06

Pokhara

Although progress and skill depends on the individual, by day 4 most clients have a reliable whitewater roll and easily make their way through the class III rapids on this last day. We kayak to the take out point at Gai Ghat, load the bus and relax on the return journey to Pokhara. After a much needed hot shower and change of clothes, the group usually gets together to enjoy an end of the trip meal at one of the popular restaurants in Pokhara.
