Sherpa, Rai and Limbus are the main inhabitants of this area. Walking north up the Arun river to Sedua and Num, then crossing Barun La (13,500 ft.) into the upper Barun Khola valley for a close look at Makalu (27,750 ft.). If you are really feeling energetic and want to stretch yourself, you may choose to add to this trek by continuing to the Sherpani Col and West Col into the upper Hongdu valley. It should be added that this is a difficult and challenging addition.
Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world. The mountain was first climbed in 1955 by a French Expedition which established the north ridge. By 1993, 99 expeditions had attempted the summit with 92 climbers being successful and nine deaths.
